Mail Carrier Trusts Her Instincts And Ends Up Saving A Life
Living in a small town has its pros and cons, but the good stuff usually outweighs the bad. For example, more people know and look out for each other.
In Newmarket, New Hampshire, that's what happened when a mail delivery lady, Kayla Berridge, helped save a life. Berridge had a gut feeling and acted on it.
The Mailperson
We usually only see mail delivery people as their service title, nothing more. They are people as well!
Berridge proved her humanity with this situation, and she'll remember what she did forever.
Noticing Something Was Fishy
One house on Berridge's nine-mile route seemed off to her.
A woman in her 80s who lived in the house caused suspicion. It was as though Berridge activated her inner investigator.
"A Little Concerned"
Berridge had noticed that the mail at the elderly woman's house had begun to pile up, which caused her some concern.
"I just had this gut feeling and wanted to make sure," Berridge told WMUR 9 News.
The Age
Whenever mail piles up at someone's home, it can mean several things.
Since the woman who lived at this specific house was older, Berridge had every right to follow her instincts.
Usual Reasons For Backed Up Mail
A few common reasons people let their mail pile up include being lazy, going on vacation, or sometimes something far more worrisome.
Now, it isn't usually the last option, but Berridge had a feeling and needed to look into it.
Time For Action
There was another reason why Berridge chose to take action, and it makes plenty of sense.
"Most people put a hold in if they're not there, so when people pick up their mail every day, you start to notice their habits," she said.
Another Cause For Concern
Another thing that seemed odd was that this woman would occasionally talk to Berridge after her deliveries.
Also, her car was still in the driveway. Berridge made the decision to call the police for a wellness check.
To The Rescue
After getting the police involved, the story really opened up. Officers found the woman stuck on her bedroom floor!
There were heavy frames and artwork on top of her poor body.
Trapped For Days
The police report noted the woman got trapped under those items for a full three days.
They theorized she tried using her bed for support, but the items on the bed fell on her during the process.
In The End
Even though the woman suffered from hypothermia and dehydration, the police said she was stable and recovered.
In the small town of Newmarket, New Hampshire, it's easy to lend a hand. "Everyone has each other's backs," Berridge told CNN.
